Technology stocks are experiencing one of their most volatile periods in more than two decades, with options markets pricing significantly larger swings in the Nasdaq 100 than in the broader S&P 500.

Tech Volatility Hits 23-Year High

According to Bloomberg data highlighted by market commentator The Kobeissi Letter, the ratio of the Nasdaq 100 Volatility Index (VXN) to the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) climbed to 1.7 points, its highest level in 23 years and the first time it has exceeded 1.5 since 2018.

That ratio is now above its peak during the 2008 financial crisis, when it reached about 1.6 points.

The VXN stood at 28 versus 16 for the VIX, while remaining above 20 for five consecutive months, its longest streak since the 2022 bear market.
