Dow Falls Over 200 Points; Tesla Shares Slip After Q1 Results

U.S. stocks traded lower this morning, with the Dow Jones index falling more than 200 points on Thursday.

Following the market opening Thursday, the Dow traded down 0.44% to 49,271.18 while the NASDAQ fell 0.31% to 24,581.28. The S&P 500 also fell, dropping, 0.22% to 7,122.47.

Leading and Lagging Sectors

Utilities shares jumped by 1.4% on Thursday.

In trading on Thursday, information technology stocks fell by 0.7%.

Top Headline

Shares of Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) fell over 1% on Thursday after the company reported first-quarter financial results.

Tesla reported first-quarter revenue of $22.71 billion, up 16% year-over-year. The revenue missed a Street consensus estimate of $22.39 billion, according to data from Benzinga Pro. Tesla's adjusted earnings per share of 41 cents beat a Street consensus estimate of 37 cents per share.

  • Auddia Inc (NASDAQ:AUUD) shares shot up 140% to $9.29. Auddia’s LT350 secured 14th patent expanding AI infrastructure portfolio to 16 issued and pending patents for parking lot deployments.
  • Shares of Cumberland Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:CPIX) got a boost, surging 59% to $4.85 after the company announced that Apotex will acquire its line of branded pharmaceuticals for $100 million.
  • Trio-Tech International (NYSE:TRT) shares were also up, gaining 41% to $11.72.

Equities Trading DOWN

  • zSpace, Inc. (NASDAQ:ZSPC) shares dropped 47% to $0.62.
  • Shares of ASGN Inc (NYSE:ASGN) were down 39% to $24.80 after the company reported worse-than-expected first-quarter financial results and issued second-quarter guidance below estimates.
  • Medpace Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:MEDP) was down, falling 25% to $379.52 after the company announced first-quarter results.

Commodities

In commodity news, oil traded up 1.4% to $94.22 while gold traded down 0.2% at $4,744.20.

Silver traded down 2.7% to $75.840 on Thursday, while copper fell 1.1% to $6.0600.

Euro zone

European shares were mostly lower today. The eurozone's STOXX 600 declined 0.1%, while Spain's IBEX 35 Index fell 0.7%. London's FTSE 100 fell 0.3%, Germany's DAX slipped 0.3% and France's CAC 40 gained 0.7% during the session.

Asia Pacific Markets

Asian markets closed lower on Thursday, with Japan's Nikkei 225 falling 0.75%, China's Shanghai Composite declining 0.32%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index dipping 0.95% and India's BSE Sensex dropping 1.09%.

Economics

  • U.S. initial jobless claims climbed by 6,000 to 214,000 in the week ending April 18, compared to market estimates of 212,000.
  • The Chicago Fed National Activity Index fell to -0.20 in March, recording its lowest reading since November 2025, compared to a revised level of +0.03 in February.
